RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To study the differences in the clinical features of children with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in different age groups during the epidemic of Omicron variant. METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed on the clinical data of 211 children with COVID-19 who were admitted to the Department of General Pediatrics, Zhongshan People's Hospital, from December 9, 2022 to January 8, 2023. According to their age, they were divided into 4 groups: 1 month-<1 year (n=84), 1-<3 years group (n=64), 3-<5 years (n=29), and ≥5 years (n=34). The above groups were compared in terms of general status, clinical features, ancillary examination results, treatment, and outcome. RESULTS: The children aged <3 years accounted for 70.1% (148/211) of all hospitalized children with COVID-19, and the 3-<5 years group and the ≥5 years group had a significantly higher proportion of children with underlying diseases than the 1 month-<1 year group and the 1-<3 years group (P<0.05). Compared with the other three groups, the 1 month-<1 year group had significantly higher incidence rates of dyspnea, nasal congestion/nasal discharge, diarrhea and significantly lower incidence rates of convulsion and nervous system involvement (P<0.05). Moreover, compared with the other three groups, the 1 month-<1 year group had significantly higher incidence rates of increases in bile acid and creatine kinase isoenzyme and significantly lower incidence rates of decreased platelet count, increased neutrophil percentage, and decreased lymphocyte percentage (P<0.05). The 1 month-<1 year group had a significantly higher incidence rate of mild COVID-19 than the 1-<3 years group and a significantly lower incidence rate of severe/critical COVID-19 than the other three groups (P<0.05). Compared with the other three groups, the 1 month-<1 year group had a significantly higher proportion of children receiving oxygen inhalation therapy (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Children with COVID-19 in different age groups have different clinical features during the epidemic of Omicron variant, especially between the children aged 1 month to <1 year and those aged ≥1 year.

RESUMO

AIM: The study aims to investigate the combined effects of chrysin and cisplatin on hepatoma(HepG2) cell lines in vivo and in vitro. OBJECTIVE: Studies have suggested that chrysin can enhance the sensitivity of tumor cells to apoptosis. Drug resistance in tumor cells reduced the effectiveness of chemotherapy drugs such as cisplatin. We investigated whether the combination of chrysin and cisplatin can induce more apoptosis than chrysin alone and cisplatin alone. METHODS: HepG2 cells were pretreated with chrysin for 2 h, followed by the addition of cisplatin for another 24 h. The morphologic changes were observed under inverted microscope and the cell viability was measured using the MTT test. The protein and cleavage of caspase-3,8,9, PARP, and cFLIP were determined by Western blotting. RESULTS: The cell viability of the HepG2 cell can be reduced by the combination of chrysin pretreatment for 2 h and cisplatin addition for 24 h; Caspase-3,8,9 and PARP were cleaved after 12 h treatment with chrysin and cisplatin; Pancaspase inhibitor, Z-VAD-fmk, could reverse the apoptosis induced by chrysin and cisplatin in HepG2 cells; cFLIP was down-regulated by the combination of chrysin and cisplatin, and could be reversed by Z-VAD-fmk; the xenografted HepG2 cells formed a tumor in one week; At the end of the experiment, there were significant differences in relative tumor volume (RTV) and relative tumor proliferation rate between the combined group and the control group, the chrysin group and the cisplatin group; Western blotting showed that the levels of PARP, cFLIP, and caspase-3 proteins in isolated tumor tissues also decreased under the combined action of chrysin and cisplatin. CONCLUSION: The combination of chrysin and cisplatin induces apoptosis of hepatic tumor in vivo and in vitro. It downregulates cFLIP and then activates caspase-8, which triggers caspase-mediated apoptosis of HepG2 cell.

RESUMO

Using original texts of Confucian and Taoist primary classics as materials, we conducted an eight-week educational intervention experiment combining classroom teaching and post-class reflection as cultural manipulation. Ninety-four sixth-grade students from three parallel mainstream classes were randomly assigned to three intervention groups, comprising two experimental groups (Confucian and Taoist values interventions) and a control group (natural science intervention). The results suggest that the Confucian intervention had a positive effect on interdependent self and holistic thinking, the Taoist intervention had a positive effect on independent self and holistic thinking, and the natural science intervention promoted analytical thinking.

RESUMO

Wisdom views in different cultural contexts are closely connected with the corresponding culture's worldview. Some results are found by comparing the wisdom concepts in Chinese and Western cultures: Firstly, the early wisdom concepts, both in China and the West, contain the elements of intelligence and virtue. Whereas, from the Enlightenment to the Piagetian school, the western concept of wisdom has then shifted to the role of cognition and knowledge; By contrast, the traditional Chinese wisdom concept has been treating wisdom as a virtue. Modern Chinese and western wisdom psychologists are inclined to accept the wisdom meta-theory of "integration of intelligence and virtue". Secondly, both Chinese and the Western philosophy advocate using wisdom to solve real-life problems. Western thinkers focus on practical problems in the material world, i.e. reconciling conflicts between people and the world through understanding and changing the environment. However, Chinese philosophers focus on internal spiritual problems, i.e. improving the individual realm to solve the contradictions inside oneself. Thirdly, both China and the West highlight the comprehensive application of multiple thinking modes. While comparing with the west, which is excelled in using logical and analytical thinking modes and utilizing rational cognition, China is far better at using dialectical and holistic thinking modes and applying intuitive comprehension.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore the ototoxicity of toluene in the early development of zebrafish embryos/larvae. METHODS: Zebrafish were utilized to explore the ototoxicity of toluene. Locomotion analysis, immunofluorescence, and qPCR were used to understand the phenotypes and molecular mechanisms of toluene ototoxicity. RESULTS: The results demonstrated that at 2 mmol/L, toluene induced zebrafish larvae death at 120 hours post fertilization (hpf) at a rate of 25.79% and inhibited the rate of hatching at 72 hpf. Furthermore, toluene exposure inhibited the distance travelled and average swimming velocity of zebrafish larvae while increasing the frequency of movements. As shown by fluorescence staining of hair cells, toluene inhibited the formation of lateral line neuromasts and middle line 1 (Ml 1) neuromasts in 3 days post fertilization larvae in a concentration-dependent manner. Toluene altered the expression level of genes involved in ear development/function in zebrafish, among which the mRNA levels of cd164l2, tekt3, and pcsk5a were upregulated, while the level of otofb was downregulated, according to the qPCR results. CONCLUSION: This study indicated that toluene may affect the development of both the inner ear and lateral line systems in zebrafish, while the lateral line system may be more sensitive to toluene than the inner ear.

RESUMO

Based on the construction of the "Taiji Model of Confucian Self" that aims to explain self-structure, the progression of self-cultivation and the dominion of person-making in the context of Chinese Confucian culture, according to the ideas of Taoism and Buddhism, the present study develops the "Taiji Model of Taoist Self" and the "Taiji Model of Buddhist Self" and identifies four realms of Taoist self-cultivation and five realms of Buddhist self-cultivation. In light of the Taiji Model of Taoist Self, self-structure can be divided into the soft self (the Yin part) and the hard self (the Yang part). The Taiji Model of Taoist Self splits the process of self-cultivation into four realms: suren (vulgarian), xianren (solon), shengren (saint), and zhenren (immortal). The Taiji Model of Buddhist Self splits self-structure into the dusty self (the Yin part) and the pure self (the Yang part) and divides the process of self-cultivation into five realms: Humans and Heaven, Arhat, Pratyekabuddha, Bodhisattva, and Buddha.

RESUMO

This publication revises the taxonomy of the leaf beetle genus Exomis Weise, 1889 (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Clytrini) which is endemic to China. Six new species are described: E. deqinensis sp. nov., E. huangi sp. nov., E. pubescens sp. nov., E. pubipennis sp. nov., E. tanae sp. nov. and E. viridis sp. nov., in addition to two known species, namely E. degenevei Pic, 1932 and E. peplopteroides Weise, 1889. Exomis oblongum (Lopatin Konstantinov, 2009) from China (Yunnan) is transferred to this genus as new combination. The total Chinese fauna of Exomis is thus increased to nine species. A key to these species is provided and, for each of them, also a color photo of habitus and line drawings of the aedeagus, spermatheca and kotpresse, in order to ease identification in the future.

RESUMO

Initial evidence suggests that cultural differences have consequences for wise reasoning (perspective taking, consideration of change and alternatives, intellectual humility, search for compromise, and adopting an outsider's vantage point), with more reports of wise reasoning about interpersonal conflicts among Japanese (as compared to American) young and middle-aged adults. Similarly, we found that people from the rice-farming area of southern China also exhibited greater wise reasoning when they encountered conflicts with a friend or in the workplace than those from the wheat-farming area of northern China (N = 487, 25 provinces). The relationship between rice farming and wise reasoning was mediated by loyalty/nepotism. This research advances study of the relationship between wisdom and culture. It also provides evidence for the influence of social-ecological factors on wisdom and culture.

RESUMO

While cisplatin is a first-line chemotherapeutic drug commonly used to treat patients with oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), the cisplatin-resistance poses a major challenge for its clinical application. Recent studies have shown that quercetin, a natural flavonoid found in various plants and foods possesses an anti-cancer effect. The following study examined the combined effect of quercetin and cisplatin on OSCC apoptosis in vitro and in vivo (using a mice tumor model). We found that quercetin promotes cisplatin-induced apoptosis in human OSCC (cell lines Tca-8113 and SCC-15) by down-regulating NF-κB. Pretreatment of cancer cells with quercetin inhibited the phosphorylation Akt and IKKß, and led to the suppression of NF-κB and anti-apoptotic protein xIAP. In addition, we observed that the pretreatment of cancer cells with quercetin improves extrinsic and intrinsic apoptosis by activating caspase-8 and caspase-9, respectively. Our in vivo data also indicated that the combination of quercetin and cisplatin may inhibit the xenograft growth in mice. To sum up, our results provide a new evidence for the application of quercetin and cisplatin in OSCC therapy.

RESUMO

An important theme in the development of self-psychology is the attempt by scholars to construct a self-model with universal cultural adaptability. Among them, representatives are the tripartite model of self-built by Triandis, the theory of the independent self and interdependent self-proposed by Markus and Kitayama, Yang Kuo-Shu's four-part theory of the Chinese self, Hwang Kwang-Kwo's Mandala model of self, and Shiah Yung-Jong's Non-self-Theory. However, these models have a difficult time explaining the structure and development of the Chinese self in Chinese cultural background. After pondering over Chinese traditional culture and the Chinese self, inspired by the archetype of Taiji diagram, in this paper, we construct the Taiji Model of Self. The Taiji Model of Self can not only properly represent the Chinese self-structure, but also explain the growth course of the Chinese self and four kinds of life realms of Chinese people with satisfactory cultural and ecological validity.

RESUMO

The aim of this paper is to increase understanding of the relative importance of the input of geographic and local environmental factors on richness and composition of epigaeic steppe beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae and Tenebrionidae) along a geographic (longitudinal/precipitation) gradient in the Inner Mongolia grassland. Specifically, we evaluate the associations of environmental variables representing climate and environmental heterogeneity with beetle assemblages. Beetles were sampled using pitfall traps at 25 sites scattered across the full geographic extent of the study biome in 2011-2012. We used variance partitioning techniques and multi-model selection based on the Akaike information criterion to assess the relative importance of the spatial and environmental variables on beetle assemblages. Species richness and abundance showed unimodal patterns along the geographic gradient. Together with space, climate variables associated with precipitation, water-energy balance and harshness of climate had strong explanatory power in richness pattern. Abundance pattern showed strongest association with variation in temperature and environmental heterogeneity. Climatic factors associated with temperature and precipitation variables and the interaction between climate with space were able to explain a substantial amount of variation in community structure. In addition, the turnover of species increased significantly as geographic distances increased. We confirmed that spatial and local environmental factors worked together to shape epigaeic beetle communities along the geographic gradient in the Inner Mongolia grassland. Moreover, the climate features, especially precipitation, water-energy balance and temperature, and the interaction between climate with space and environmental heterogeneity appeared to play important roles on controlling richness and abundance, and species compositions of epigaeic beetles.

RESUMO

In this study we investigated the distribution patterns, infiltration and health risk assessment of PM2.5-bound PAHs in indoor and outdoor air done in Harbin city, northeastern China. Simultaneous indoor and outdoor sampling was done to collect 264 PM2.5 samples from four sites during winter, summer, and spring. Infiltration of PAHs into indoors was estimated using Retene, Benzo [ghi]perylene and Chrysene as reference compounds, where the latter compound was suggested to be a good estimator and subsequently used for further calculation of infiltration factors (IFs). Modeling with positive matrix factorization (PMF5) and estimation of diagnostic isomeric ratios were applied for identifying sources, where coal combustion, crop residues burning and traffic being the major contributors, particularly during winter. Linear discriminant analysis (LDA) has been utilized to show the distribution patterns of individual PAH congeners. LDA showed that, the greatest seasonal variability was attributed to high molecular weight compounds (HMW PAHs). Potential health risk of PAHs exposure was assessed through relative potency factor approach (RPF). The levels of the sum of 16 US EPA priority PAHs during colder months were very high, with average values of 377 ± 228 ng m(-)(3) and 102 ± 75.8 ng m(-)(3), for the outdoors and indoors, respectively. The outdoor levels reported to be 19 times higher than the outdoor concentrations during warmer months (summer + spring), while the indoor concentrations were suggested to be 9 times and 10 times higher than that for indoor summer (average 11.73 ± 4 ng m(-3)) and indoor spring (9.5 ± 3.3 ng m(-3)). During nighttime, outdoor PAHs revealed wider range of values compared to datytime which was likely due to outdoor temperature, a weather parameter with the strongest negative influence on ∑16PAHs compared to low impact of relative humidity and wind speed.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To explore the risk factors for hospitalization case fatality of patients with acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD). METHODS: A retrospective review of medical records was performed for 182 hospitalized AECOPD patients at Nanfang Hospital from January 2010 to August 2012. Their general information, condition in stable stage, the results of spirometry, blood routine test, blood gas analysis and C-reactive protein (CRP) were collected and analyzed. The risk factors for mortality were analyzed by multivariable Logistic regression. RESULTS: Among them, 42 died during hospitalization. Univariate analysis revealed that 8 factors had significant differences between two groups (all P < 0.05): high exacerbation risk (death vs improvement group, 90.4% vs 70.0%) , low peripheral absolute lymphocyte count (73.8% vs 47.1%), high CRP (50.0% vs 17.1%), concurrent anemia (50.0% vs 27.1%), hypoproteinemia (71.4% vs 46.4%), hypercapnia (64.3% vs 30.7%), chronic pulmonary heart disease (76.1% vs 40.7%) and ischemic heart disease (19.0% vs 7.0%). By multiple Logistic regression analysis, high CRP (OR = 3.226, P = 0.009), hypercapnia (OR = 2.928, P = 0.013), chronic pulmonary heart disease (OR = 2.510, P = 0.045), low peripheral absolute lymphocyte count (OR = 2.488, P = 0.045) were the independent risk factors for hospitalization case fatality of AECOPD patients. CONCLUSION: Low peripheral absolute lymphocyte count, high CRP, hypercapnia and chronic pulmonary heart disease were the independent risk factors for mortality in hospitalized AECOPD patients.

RESUMO

The title coordination polymer, {[Ag(C(8)H(7)O(5))]·H(2)O}(n), is built from Ag(+) cations and singly protonated dehydronorcantharidin (SP-DNC) anions, with a distorted trigonal-planar geometry at the metal centre. The coordination number of Ag(I) is three (with one Ag-π bond and two Ag-O bonds, one from each of three different SP-DNC ligands), if only formal Ag-ligand bonds are considered, but can be regarded as five if longer weak Ag···O interactions are also included. The two-dimensional corrugated-sheet coordination polymer forms a non-interpenetrating framework with (4.8(2)) topology. Disordered water molecules are sandwiched between the sheets.

RESUMO

Six rectangular block all beef tallow (BT)-based and all palm oil (PO)-based model shortenings prepared on a laboratory scale, respectively denoted BTMS and POMS, were stored under temperature fluctuation cycles of 5-20 °C until granular crystals were observed. The lipid composition and thermal, polymorphic, and isothermal crystallization behaviors of the granular crystals and their surrounding materials separated from BTMS and POMS, respectively, were evaluated. The changes of nanostructure including the aggregation of high-melting triacylglycerols (TAGs) and polymorphic transformation from ß' form of double chain length structures to complicated crystal structures, in which the ß and ß' form crystals of triple and double chain length structures simultaneously coexist, had occurred in granular crystals compared with surrounding materials, whether in BTMS or in POMS. Consequently, a slower crystallization rate appeared in granular crystal parts of both model shortenings noted above, which would yield larger and fewer crystals indicated by the Avrami model analysis that would further aggregate to form large granular crystals.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate microleakage between the composite resin and cavity wall after Er,Cr:YSGG laser preparation. METHODS: Class V cavities were prepared in 30 sound extracted human premolars. The teeth were randomly divided into 3 groups (n=10).Group 1 was treated with Er,Cr:YSGG+37% phosphoric acid, group 2 was treated with Er,Cr:YSGG+FL-BOND and group 3 was treated with Er,Cr:YSGG+17% EDTA.Then the specimens were subjected to thermocycling and staining. The marginal microleakage was assessed by dye penetration method and scanning electronic microscope(SEM). The data was analyzed with SPSS11.0 software package. RESULTS: In occlusal margins, microleakage in group 2 was significantly lower than that in the other two laser groups(P<0.05).No significant difference was found between group 1 and 3 by dye penetration method. The space between the restorations and tooth structure revealed that there was significant difference between group 2 and 3(P<0.05).No significant difference was found between the other two laser groups by SEM. In gingival margins, microleakage test and the space between the restorations and tooth structure revealed that there was no significant difference among the three laser groups. There was significant difference in microleakage between the occlusal and gingival margins only in group 2(P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: It is concluded that self-etch adhesive system was effective in reducing microleakage of the occlusal margins between the composite resin and the cavity wall after Er,Cr:YSGG laser preparation. There was no significant difference in microleakage after using a total etch adhesive system and EDTA.

RESUMO

A batch of all beef tallow (BT)-based model shortening (divided into six rectangular block samples) was stored under temperature fluctuation cycles of 5-20 °C until granular crystals were observed. The lipid composition, thermal properties, and polymorphism of the granular crystals and their surrounding materials were evaluated. Furthermore, the isothermal crystallization behavior of two parts noted above was also examined by pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance (pNMR), rheology, and polarized light microscopy (PLM). The changes of nanostructure including the aggregation of high-melting triacylglycerols (TAGs) and transformation into the most stable ß polymorph occurred in granular crystals compared with surrounding materials. Concomitantly, a slower crystallization rate with a simultaneous increase in crystal growth led to the formation of large crystals and further aggregated to larger granular crystals when the size ultimately exceeded the sensory threshold.
